Hamamatsu is a sprawling city but once you get out of the urban sprawl you will are rewarded with spectacular nature as you follow the winding Tenryu River into the mountains.

Cycling in Hamamatsu

Hamamatsu in Shizuoka Prefecture is an industrial city west of Shizuoka city.

Hamamatsu has long been known for the production of musical instruments with Yamaha and Kawai prominent in the city, and motorcycles, with Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha also having factories in the area.

Historically Hamamatsu was an important communications centre in the Edo Period as it was the meeting place of the Tokaido highway (the route largely followed by today’s Tokaido Shinkansen) and the Shinano highway, which runs north along the Tenyu River to Matsumoto and Nagano.

Riding from Hamamatsu city following the Tenryu River is a popular cyclist trail and if at anytime you get tired the local train is never far away. #ridetenryu

A great area for cycling and following the many established cycling routes around Lake Hamana is a fantastic way to explore the region with the the Kanzanji Onsen area particularly appealing to weary travelers.

Bike rental is available at both Lake Hamana and Hamamatsu station catering to beginners that just want to cruise around to the more serious enthusiast looking for a challenge.

Doing a full circuit of the lake is popular with cyclists of all levels and is an incredibly satisfying experience – but beware – it is a big lake and it can get very hot in peak Summer.

Pop into The Gate close to Hamamatsu Station and talk to the friendly staff at In Hamamatsu Information Desk – they can provide you with cycling routes, help with bike rentals and also look after your luggage while you are away.

Check out some of the extensive cycling guides on Shizuoka Guide – Tenryu Area or Lake Hamanako Area.

Also check In Hamamatsu for more details on getting around the Greater Hamamatsu Area and info on other attractions on offer.
