Shizuoka Performing Arts Center

Shizuoka Performing Arts Center (SPAC) was founded in 1995 by Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. SPAC is the first publicly founded cultural organization in Japan to have residential actors as well as a technical and administrative staff that manages its own theatre venues and facilities for artistic purposes.

As a creative base of the performing arts, SPAC generates programs of creation, presentation, education and also programs of exchange / collaboration with artists and institutions of Japan and abroad.

SPAC puts its efforts into various kinds of activities such as creating a variety of theatre pieces, organizing “World Theatre Festival Shizuoka”, inviting students to the theatre, developing theatrical human resources, touring abroad, enhancing outreaching program and many more.

Shizuoka Arts Theatre is a specialized facility located in the central tip of the GranShip building (Shizuoka Convention & Arts Center).

It is a theatre space with an atmosphere of calm luxury, with brick walls surrounding the deep crimson of the seats and the darkness of the stage.

They both take up exactly half of this horseshoe-shaped space that does not have a proscenium, making the two feel very close.

Located on the top floor of the building is a room for rehearsal and a room for costume production.

We are fully equipped with facilities for both the creation and the performing of the arts.

For centuries Shizuoka was an important part of Japan’s ancient “Tokaido” Road between Tokyo and Kyoto – taking care of the many travelers passing through.

Today the Tokaido Bullet train follows the same route carrying passengers through Shizuoka. For those that stop at one of the 6 stations along the bullet train line there are many authentic experiences and adventures to be found.

Although Shizuoka is perhaps most well known as the home of the Majestic Mt Fuji there are also many local experiences throughout the prefecture that are listed in our Mount Fuji Travel product listing page, such as a guided tour around Fujinomiya township, cycling tour to visit real tea farmers, and a hiking tour around the base of Mt. Fuji , that are designed to help visitors gain more insight into what makes Shizuoka such a great place.

SPAC is the Prefectures professional performing group based in Shizuoka City.

Fujisan World Heritage Center, established in 2017, provides an opportunity for visitors to study the history and culture of Mt. Fuji, with multi-language descriptions available. Inside it has been designed to replicate the feeling of climbing Mt. Fuji with large screens on the wall that show the scenery you can expect as you hike from the ocean to the very top of the mountain. Then, at the top of the building, a stunning view of the mountain itself is waiting for you!
