Kagegawa Castle Town Day Trip
Avoid the crowds and spend a day and take a trip back in time to explore this lovely castle town.
Rebuilt using traditional building techniques (no nails) and using all wood this is one of the only castles in Japan that gives you a genuine appreciation for traditional Japanese workmanship. Kakegawa town is an easy 1 day stop and has something for the whole family with the famous Bird Park, the castle, tearoom and lord’s manor and a lot of good Japanese food options.
Kakegawa Bird Park
Popular with kids the kakegawa Bird park is a great stop to take a break from temples and shrines.
Head back to the station and grab some lunch and then wander up to the castle.
Kakegawa Tea Gardens
Find calm and inner peace while enjoying a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
Visit the Lord’s Manor – wander through the rooms and get a glimpse of how Japanese lived 400 years ago.
Kakegawa has lots of great options for food but Honjin Dori has a special intimate feel and is a great place to bar hop.
When to Visit?
During Spring a variety of flowers bloom along the river side and there are of course many cherry blossoms making for some great photos. Unfortunately this also brings the crowds (especially on the weekends)
In Winter the weather is often stable and the skies are clear making for a dramatic blue background and you will sometimes feel as though you have the place to yourself.
The cooler climes of Fall/Autumn are a great time to walk through Kakegawa and the changing colour of the leaves on the hills look spectacular from the top of the castle tower.
