Omaezaki Beach Culture
With vast stretches of coastline and consistent wind Omaezaki attracts windsurfers and surfers.
Rent a car from Kakegawa station and drive the 30-40 mins to the coast and you will find and hip little beach community and some of the most laid-back, friendliest people in Japan.
Day 1
Kakegawa Station
Rental Car
Pick up a rental car at one of the many rental car companies close to Kakegawa Bullet train station.
Hamaoka Sand Dunes
Drive to the Hamoka Sand Dunes to get some great views out to the Pacific Ocean (Kawazu Cherry trees blossom in late February / early March with a local market that is full of character)
Strawberry Picking
Shizuoka has many great spots for strawberry picking between January to May and the Hamaoka strawberries are some of the best in the Prefecture.
Pacific Cafe & Lighthouse
Once you are ready for lunch head up the coastline road to the Pacific Cafe for a great meal with great views of the ocean. From there it is a short walk up to the lighthouse on the hill.
Afternoon Outdoor Activities
The area close to the lighthouse offers a variety of activities including – Bicycle ride, swimming, beach art lessons. Or drive to the fishing port 5 mins away & jump on a sunset boat cruise.
Stay with the locals
Take the opportunity to stay at a local ‘Minshuku’ (Japanese style Bed and Breakfast) – Omaezaki area Mishuku provide amazing fresh seafood dinner options.
Day 2
Fish Market & Shopping Experience
Omaezaki is a fishing town and the local fish market provides a great opportunity to see one up close and personal. If you would like to get out & catch your own fish there are local charters available.
Enjoy a Minshuku breakfast
After an early start it is great to be able to return to the minshuku and enjoy a hot meal and coffee before heading out for the day.
Try some surfing or body boarding
Hamaoka and Omaezaki have great surfing options that provide waves in different weather. There are a few surf shops around that have boards and wetsuit rentals.
Take the long way home
Take a scenic drive through the tea farms back to Kakegawa Station.
